The Weaver
2019, Ink on Paper
65 cm x 150 cm - 59 x 25.6 in (3 pannels)
A hybrid form – part weaver’s meshing shuttle, part 1920s steamer – The Weaver has strange ties wrapped around its centre. Are they mooring ropes or a warp threads, reminiscent of a Penelope figure? There is no sense of scale that would enable us to say for sure. The unidentified object has a handle, could it have a utilitarian purpose? This impression of uncertain identity is confirmed by the object’s irregular chimneys, a shape that can be found in ships and vases – both vessels in different senses of the word – two objects that are defined by the emptiness within them.
